ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Neuroscience is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge of the nervous system, with an emphasis on brain function. To achieve this goal, the Department draws on experts from a broad range of fields including neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, theoretical neuroscience, and elements of psychology and cognitive science.

Research in the Department addresses a wide spectrum of fundamental neuroscience questions: What molecules play key roles in brain function? How do neurons perform the unique functions that distinguish them from other cells in the body? How do our brains perceive the world around us? How do we learn new facts and skills? Research projects underway range from in situ and in vitro studies to functional magnetic resonance imaging to mathematical modeling of neural systems.

The graduate program in neuroscience trains students for careers devoted to the investigation of the nervous system. Student training and research may focus on neurobiology, behavioral neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience or some combination of these. Interdisciplinary studies are strongly encouraged.
